Bill of materials for recapping an Atari 600XL an 8-bit home computer from the 80'. This particular board is PAL revision A. When choosing the right caps, be very careful about the capacity and polarity, which must be an exact match. The Voltage can be the same or HIGHER, be also mindful about the physical dimensions, so that the capacitors will fit to their slots.
Bill of materials:
1.)C95,C96 -Radial 470uF 16V 1x — 8x12mm (could fit bigger)
2.)C44 -Axial 47uF 10V 1x — 6.3x13mm
3.)C100, C102, C103- Radial 4.7uF 35V NP( non-polarized/ bipolar) 3x — 5x11mm (could fit bigger)
4.)C83, C101, C115 -Radial 10uF 16V 3x — 5x11mm
5.)C1, C6, C13, C64- Axial 22uF 16V 4x — 6.3x13mm
I have read one some forums that its not necessary to recap old Atari, but I’ll just let my measurements speak for themselves…
I have yet to change all of the capacitors (axials are a bit harder to come around). But the capacitance was off from 11 (OKish) to 45% (not OK).
10% off spec, usually is not a problem, however higher discrepancy from the specification could cause problems. Swapping C44 (Axial 47uF 10V), made a noticeably difference in picture quality for me (the image is more saturated and much sharper). Changing C100, C102, C103 improved the sound, all in all I would recommend that you change your 30+year old capacitors.
